In 2017 Pacific Opera Victoria premiered my opera (music and libretto), Ratttenbury. In 2016 my opera Fallujah premiered with Long Beach Opera and New York City Opera. I wrote Pauline with author Margaret Atwood, an opera that premiered with City Opera Vancouver in 2014.
My music has been sung for the queen and has opened the Commonwealth Games. It's often performed at international concerts, competitions, and festivals. I've held residencies with the Victoria Symphony, the International Choral Kathumixw, the Urban Youth Choir Festival (Sweden), and the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA). I write music and design sound for theatre, and I score national and international documentary films and series.
I'm a former jazz pianist, rock drummer, and street musician, and a self-taught composer. My undergrad (BMus in classical and contemporary percussion) is from the University of Victoria, and I've studied jazz at the Banff Centre.
I'm a recipient of a federal SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) scholarship, a Canada Council of the Arts project grant, and travel grants. I've participated in various arts granting and international competition juries.
I'm interested in architecture (heritage and modern) and urban planning; I've volunteered on active transportation advisory committees for the City of Victoria and the District of Oak Bay in British Columbia.
I'm currently completing an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. I'm a member of the Dean's External Advisory Committee for the University of Victoria's Faculty of Fine Arts. I'm the Social Media Manager for Hakai Magazine where I get to read and share coastal science and societies articles. I'm a licensed drone operator, and the co-caretaker of three spoiled chickens. I once aced a practice test to be a machine operator at the Honolulu Airport.
In our spare time my wife and I enjoy paddle boarding, hiking, gardening, and painting. She is a much better painter than me.
