Tobin Stokes composes for opera, film, theatre, choirs, and more. He has scored dozens of international documentary films broadcast on BBC, PBS, CBC, ABC (Australia) and other networks.

His opera, Pauline, with libretto by author Margaret Atwood, premiered in Vancouver in 2014. Fallujah, his opera with libretto by Iraqi/American playwright Heather Raffo premiered with Long Beach Opera and New York City Opera in 2016. His earlier opera, The Vinedressers, has seen three productions, and his latest opera, Rattenbury, premiered with Pacific Opera Victoria.

 

Tobin's music for children's and adult choirs is performed around the world, and has been published in the US, Canada, and France. His orchestral music has been commissioned and performed with various Canadian orchestras. He has recorded with the Vancouver Symphony, and orchestras in Prague, Moscow, and Bratislava. Tobin has composed music for large events such as the 2010 Olympics and the XV Commonwealth Games.

Past residencies include the International Choral Kathaumixw, the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy, the EU Urban Youth Choral Festival (Sweden), and the Victoria Symphony, Canada. Tobin is a recipient of various awards and grants. He also writes opera libretti, lyrics for songs and musical theatre, and dabbles in playwriting and poetry. His passion for theatre collaboration includes sound design and occasional musical direction.
